Countries: Dominican Republic and Honduras
Funding Amount: $50,000
Goals: Provide electricity, computers, Internet connectivity, and training to schools in rural parts of Honduras and Dominican Republic.
Enersol is initiating an educational project (Edusol) that uses solar energy to bring computers and Internet connectivity to schools. They are identifying six to eight schools in both the Dominican Republic and Honduras where the electricity supply is weak or non-existent. Edusol is installing one solar-powered computer in each identified rural school, providing training to teachers, students and community members in computer usage and solar technology, and offering technical assistance to guarantee the sustainability of the program. These computer experiences are going to expand the students’ horizons through CD-ROM-based reading and math training programs in Spanish, and through communication with the outside world through the Web.
